Education infrastructure
David Smawfield maintains an especial interest, and has a strong range of experience and expertise, in relation to a broad range of issues to do with the use of educational infrastructure.
This encompasses:
- Pedagogical aspects of school design - and especially promoting the design potential for schools facilities to be used outside of normal school hours, by the community, for educational and social purposes, as well as for income-generation
- The use of whole school grounds as learning environments

Within this field, David Smawfield's consultancy experience has included:
- Advising contractors on school design issues, during competitive bidding procedures, as part of the United Kingdom's Private Finance Inititiatives
- The leadership of a consultancy team which undertook, on behalf of the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID) 'A Scoping Study on the Contribution of Engineering and Planning to Education Strategies'
- The preparation of a 'Training Brief', for DFID Advisers on issues relating to Education Infrastructure
- An Evaluation of the Infrastructure Component of the DFID funded 'Gansu Basic Education Project', in China.
